Organic food sales are growing, yet most people continue to buy conventional food. Even though non-organic food is full of chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides. Not something you would like to eat. Even the healthiest looking tomato could contain chemical food additives that will make them stay “fresh” for long periods of time. Scary, right? Thankfully you have the option to buy organic food now! What we really want to know is if organic food is truly worth buying? Or is it just another trend designed to make us pay even more money for our food.

Effects of Chemicals in Our Food

Fruits and vegetables that are not organic food will almost surely contain Pesticides. According to “Pediatrics” published in June 2011 by Harvard University School of Public Health, these pesticides are linked to attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder in children. Preservatives like nitrites convert into carcinogenic substances in our body. Fats and sweeteners that are common in processed foods can increase your risk of obesity and diabetes according to “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” published in April 2004.

So what do we do now if all of our food is contaminated somehow? Over the last couple of years, more and more people are changing to organic food. Organic food is considered to be safer, healthier and even tastier than regular food. It is also said to be better for the environment and the animals. But, what is organic food?

What is Organic Food?

Organic foods are foods that have been grown or farmed without the use of artificial chemicals, antibiotics or hormones. They are also free of artificial food additives.  Meaning that organic foods won’t contain all of the scary substances mentioned before. This means they are a lot better for your health and overall wellbeing

Should we Change to Organic Food?

Buying organic is something you should with no doubt consider if you don’t want to suffer from the consequences associated with the chemicals in our food. It is always a good idea to get your products fresh from the farmers market and always read the labels. But there are a few things you might want to take into consideration when you buy organic food.

Organic Labeling Standards

There are different categories of labeling based on product composition. It could say 100 percent organic, Organic or Made with Organic Ingredients and each of them mean different things.  I will explain what each of the different labels means so that when you go to the supermarket you don’t feel frustrated with all of the different types of organic. There are so-called rules for labeling organic retail products. These regulations cover the wording allowed on the front and back panel of a product. These regulations are addressed under the “Product Composition” section of the USDA organic regulations. They cover the wording allowed on both the front panel and the information panel of a packaged product.


The label “Organic” is used to label products that contain a minimum of 95 percent organic ingredients. Up to 5 percent of the ingredients may be non-organic agricultural products that are not commercially available as organic.

Made with Organic Ingredients

This label can be can be used to label a product that contains at least 70 percent organically produced ingredients (excluding salt and water). There are a number of detailed constraints regarding the ingredients that comprise the nonorganic portion.

100% Organic

“100 percent organic” can be used to label any product that contains 100 percent organic ingredients (excluding salt and water, which are considered natural). Most raw, unprocessed farm products can be designated “100 percent organic.” Likewise, many value-added farm products that have no added ingredients—such as grain flours, rolled oats, etc.—can also be labeled “100 percent organic.”

Containing Organic Ingredients

When you see this label it means that only a part of the ingredients in this product is truly organic. How many? Well, it is usually up to 50%. So have in mind when buying products with this label that only half of the ingredients there are organic. The rest will contain chemicals and artificial additives.

Specific Ingredient Listings

The specific organic ingredients may be listed in the ingredient statement of products containing less than 70 percent organic contents—for example, “Ingredients: water, barley, beans, organic tomatoes, salt.”

Is Organic truly healthy?

Some people make the mistake and think that because a label says organic what they are buying is completely healthy. You can find organic chips, cookies, ice cream and that doesn’t mean they are healthy. They still contain high levels of oil and sugars. Organic food is definitely safer, your chances of getting pesticide residue are much less with organic food. Organically grown foods have more nutrients – vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and micronutrients – than commercially grown foods. Because the soil is managed and nourished with sustainable practices by responsible standards. Organic farming supports eco-sustenance or farming in harmony with nature.

Methods used to grow crops organically help reduce pollution by ensuring sustainability over the long term, thus its goal is to produce food while establishing ecological balance to prevent soil fertility and pest problems. This results in dramatically decreasing, if not eliminating agrochemical needs which cause environmental contamination.

Crop diversity has dramatically decreased in the past 50 years due to the prevalence of crops grown in monoculture. This makes plant species less resilient to disease. Foods that are organically grown preserve agricultural diversity helping to ensure food security and safeguard biodiversity.

You can find a lot of organic brands out there you just have to be careful and read the labels carefully. Have in mind that we are what we eat and if anything I don’t want to be pesticides, hormones and food additives that are terrible for my wellbeing.
